Support for abused women vital to negotiate legal system

Women experiencing domestic violence have identified assistance from a domestic violence service as a vital support in accessing and negotiating the legal system to obtain protection from an abusive partner or ex-partner.

Research launched recently by Ivana Bacik on behalf of SAFE Ireland, the national representative body for 40 domestic violence services in Ireland, highlights the stories of 13 women and their experiences of engaging with the Gardai, the legal system, the Courts Service and the judiciary.

A new era for Kilcornan

Kilcornan is a truely special place. The Brothers of Charity owned estate, which is located in the village of Clarinbridge, was for many years home to nearly 150 people with various forms of intellectual disability. However many parts of the facility now lie dormant due to the development of a community based strategy, which means service users have moved out to live in local villages and towns and are integrated into community life. This is now seen as best practice and it has meant a number of the buildings and facilities in Kilcornan are available for potential use by community groups and businesses.

Initiative to give teenage inventors a head start comes to Galway

Galway Science and Technology Forum, in partnership with NUI Galway, has invited TeenTech to Galway. TeenTech is an industry-led initiative that helps students understand how STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) subjects are the pathway to tomorrow’s careers, and to give teenage inventors and innovators a head start.

The award winning event will bring 300 teenagers from 30 secondary schools across Galway city and county together with some 140 scientists, engineers, and technologists for a day of interesting challenges and experiments. Students and teachers will meet teams from leading science and technology companies and find out about the career opportunities and the skills required to pursue a career in these areas.

Appeal for information after tiny pup dumped in bin

The GSPCA has this week asked the public to keep an eye out for abandoned pups following the discovery of a three-week old pup in a wheelie bin in Gort.

The dog, believed to be a Pomeranian/shiatsu cross, had been subjected to a botched tail docking procedure. The tiny pup also had a skin infection and was riddled with worms.

‘Unprecedented’ numbers attending A&E put pressure on staff, warns union

Record numbers attending UHG’s emergency department this week has put “unprecedented” pressure on services, according to a nursing union spokesperson. There were 34 people awaiting beds on Monday, 13 were on trolleys and 17 were inappropriately accommodated in wards on Tuesday while the figures for Wednesday were the same.
