Carbon Nightclub Galway raises much needed funds for GSPCA

In response to a recent story that circulated in the news that featured a husky by the name of Macari, who was the subject of horrific animal abuse when his eyes were shot with pellet guns, Carbon nightclub Galway have raised over €1,000 from their recent ‘Zoology’ fundraiser in aid of the Galway Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GSPCA).

Award for Yeats Ballylee Mile at Council Golden Mile event

The Burren Lowlands Group was among the winners at this year’s Golden Mile of Galway Awards, receiving the Built Heritage Award for a mile extending from Ballylee Cross to the Ballyaneen lios/fort. This is one of the most historic roads in the county as it includes Thoor Ballylee, an old mill and miller’s house, Yeats’ cottage, ring forts, a blessed well, and 19th century farmhouses.

The mile was traversed by such famous people as the poet WB Yeats, Lady Gregory, the blind poet Raftery, and the local beauty Mary Hynes, who was immortalised by all three.

The first ‘NUI Galway Mini Med School’ is taking place in January and February to encourage and inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals. The programme is aimed at Transition, 5th and 6th year students and will be run on campus on January 27 and February 3, 10, and 17 2016. NUI Galway Mini Med School is designed to give students a taste of what it would be like to study a healthcare-related degree at the University, while encouraging them to pursue their interests. It is the second initiative of its kind in Ireland along with the College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI).

Local hoteliers upbeat about 2016

Following a year of strong tourism growth, hotels and guesthouses in Galway are upbeat going into 2016, according to the latest quarterly barometer from the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF). Local hoteliers have benefitted from a 13 per cent increase in overseas visitors to Ireland over the last 12 months, including significant growth key markets such as North America (visitors up 13 per cent), Britain (up 11 per cent) and the rest of Europe (up 14 per cent).

Searches continue for missing student Michael Bugler

Searches are continuing around Galway city for missing student Michael Bugler. The Ennis native, who is a studying law at NUI Galway, has been missing since the early hours of last Friday morning. The 20 year old was last seen walking near his home in The Claddagh at 1am after he left the Quay’s Bar. CCTV footage tracks him as far as passing the Claddagh Church as he appears to be on his way home to Fairhill Road.

Local tragedies have numbed us all this festive season

Tragedy and misfortune seem to be amplified the nearer they are to the Christmas season. Our reaction to news of the darkest kind at this time of year centres on the ruination of the occasion, the absence of friends, the destruction of memories and the fact that it careers into the path of a season that is ostensibly presented as one of joy and familial togetherness.

In Galway and the west this week, that image has been well and truly shattered by a series of tragedies that has ripped at the heartstrings of the entire community. Locally this week, it is hard not to be affected by all that has gone on; one would have to be made of ice not to be moved by the sadness emanating from the tragedies that have happened in the region every day for the last five. Our hearts feel like they have been torn out at the seemingly never-ending stream of death and injury that has come our way in the past week.

Cost of flooding clean-up will exceed €12 million

The devastating aftermath of Storm Desmond was outlined in stark terms by Galway County Council executives at its monthly meeting in County Buildings yesterday (Wednesday). And director of services Liam Gavin warned that the damage in many areas was yet to be fully assessed as they were still flooded but the initial tally was thought to be €12.2 million.

To celebrate the historic Irish tradition of Nollaig na mBan (Women’s Little Christmas) on January 6, 2016, Breast Cancer Research encourages friends, family, neighbours, classmates, or work colleagues to gather and host an event to raise awareness and funds for vital breast cancer research.

Participation in the charity’s campaign provides an opportunity to celebrate the contribution of women while also positively impacting the future for women. Funds raised through the campaign will support breast cancer research focused on personalised medicine, breast regeneration, and innovative diagnostics and therapeutics currently being conducted at the Lambe Institute for Translational Research at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
