‘Crippling the small man’

A young man in Athenry, who is building a house on family owned land, has been in contact with the Galway Advertiser to express his anger that Galway County Council and Irish Water are charging a combined total of €4,800 to install a pipe to connect to the water mains. The water runs directly in front of the site on which the man is building.

The couple have already paid a development levy of €3,530 to the council for recreational amenities, and €1,800 to the ESB to connect to electricity. Therefore before they begin to install the foundation of their house, they will have shelled out more than €10,000 to connect to basic utilities.

Science on Screen initiative to promote tech and maths in film production

The SFI Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM) at NUI Galway and the Galway Film Centre have launched a partnership project called ‘Science on Screen’, funded through Science Foundation Ireland’s (SFI) Discover Programme. The Programme aims to facilitate, promote and increase the inclusion of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) content in Irish film and TV production.

About a quarter of a century ago, I remember talking to a doctor in north Galway whose dream it was to make his native Glenamaddy the live music centre of the country. At the time, the only suitable large concert venue capable of handling the mega acts was the then Point in Dublin (now the 3 Arena). This was also a time when the country had effectively staged Europe’s biggest live music concert in a converted stables in rural Co Cork. Dr Paddy Geraghty owned a massive riding stables on the outskirts of the town and he often stood there and imagined it full to the brim, a sort of musical Newgrange attracting thousands of fans from far and wide.

New archdiocesan magazine to be launched at Novena next week

The Galway Solemn Novena, will begin this Monday 15 February and run until Tuesday 23 February, with over 10,000 expected to attend over the nine-day celebration. To facilitate parking for Novena Gaol Road, along the Southern and Western boundaries of Galway Cathedral will be temporarily closed. An alternative route is available along the Eastern boundary of Galway Cathedral. Local access will be maintained at all times. Advance diversion signage will be in place prior to work commencing.

As part of this year’s Novena, the new Galway Arch Diocesan Magazine, New Horizon will be officially launched on Tuesday February 16 at each session of the day. The magazine will be launched by members of the clergy and well known Galway personalities and will be available to buy in the Cathedral.
