Champagne was sipped and chocolates savoured in the office of the Galway Advertiser on Tuesday. Courtesy of owner Ronnie O’Gorman, it was a simple but thoughtful recognition of the female employers to celebrate International Women’s Day.

It seems incredible that not many years ago women were more likely restricted to a Christmas sherry at home, unable to buy a drink in a public house in Ireland, or work in the public service after they were married. Times do change for the better as we celebrate the amazing achievements of women who were once passed from fathers’ hands to husbands’.

Byrne outlines urgent need for channel at Cahermore to be extended

Flooding was on the agenda again at Monday’s meeting of Galway County Council, with Kinvara Councillor Joe Byrne calling for the immediate progressing of the channel in Cahermore. A channel was constructed in the townland between Ardrahan and Kinvara in January during the height of the flooding, but it has been agreed by all that to alleviate South Galway’s flooding issues in the long-term, it needs to be deepened and lengthened.

NUI Galway announce appointment of first ever VP for Equality and Diversity in an Irish university

NUI Galway today announced the appointment of Professor Anne Scott as Vice President for Equality and Diversity. This is the first appointment of its kind in an Irish University.

Professor Scott is currently Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education, Health and Community in Liverpool John Moores University. She has worked as an academic and academic leader in the Scottish, Irish and currently the English Higher Education Systems. She held the post of Head of the School of Nursing and Human Sciences, Dublin City University (2000-2006) where she led the development of BSc, MSc and PhD programmes in the school, in addition to founding and developing a vibrant culture of research and scholarship.

Uachtarán na hÉireann, Michael D. Higgins will launch a bilingual city initiative for the City of Galway as part of a programme of events for Seachtain na Gaeilge 2016.

An tUachtarán will attend a Special City Council Meeting on 7th March 2016 to launch the project. It is hoped that the initiative will engage all sectors of the community in Galway City to promote a sustainable bilingual project, with a view to developing and improving the level of bilingualism in Galway City.
