Adjunct Professor and honorary graduate of NUI Galway, the late Michel Déon was remembered this week at the university as the Chair of French will be named in his honour. The event took place as part of a day of tribute to the French author jointly organised by NUI Galway, Cúirt International Festival of Literature and the French Embassy, in the presence of French Ambassador to Ireland, M. Jean-Pierre Thébault, and of one of Michel Déon’s fellow members of the Académie Française, M. Frédéric Vitoux.
NUI Galway was proud to honour the literary achievements of Michel Déon on the occasion of his conferring with an honorary degree some decades ago. In conferring that honour the NUI was pleased to celebrate Michel’s remarkable talent as a French writer and ‘académicien’; his enduring bond with Ireland and his important role in sharing the Irish artistic imagination with the world.”

Fresh from their series of magnificent wins at this year’s Skibbereen Grand League Regatta, Limerick Regatta and Irish Schools Regatta the Colaiste Iognaid (Jes) Rowing Club will hold a fundraising Ergathon in Galway on the Bank Holiday Monday May 1.
All funds raised will help the club purchase new boats to replace aging stock. There will be two locations for the fundraising rowing event on the May Bank Holiday Monday - Shop St beside the Oscar Wilde statue in the city centre and on the prom in Salthill, next to the car park.

The sister of a 30-year-old Latvian man who was strangled to death by a fellow Latvian has said she misses her brother every day and she still cannot believe that he is dead. The testimony was heard as part of a victim impact statement read yesterday (Wednesday) to the Central Criminal Court in Dublin, where a 31-year-old man was sentenced to life in prison for murdering the woman’s brother.

I was in the middle of a recurring boring dream at the time and for me the idea of never-ending boredom was far worse than an eternity of fire and brimstone. It would have been my hell. As a kid I loved Eurovision. The build-up, that iconic anthem, the sheer fact that across Europe, we were all tuned in to watch the same things. Back in those days, RTE's only eurowide broadcast would have been when they showed the European Cup and European Cup Winners Cup finals.
