First national survey of patient experience includes UHG and Portiuncula

University Hospital Galway and Portiuncula University Hospital are participating in the National Patient Experience Survey, a new nationwide survey asking patients for their views on hospital care.

With an estimated 27,000 patients across 40 hospitals eligible to participate, approximately 2,500 of these in the Galway area, this will be the largest single survey of the healthcare system to be conducted in Ireland. All adult patients who spend at least 24 hours in a public hospital and who are discharged during the month of May will be asked to complete the survey.

Free training available for the unemployed on western side of the city

Free training for the unemployed is currently available in Shantalla through the Galway Family History Society West project. The overall aim of the project is to provide skills and related knowledge to further develop and to enable people obtain employment or further education.

The programme is a Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) accredited course. QQI was previously known as the Further Education and Training Awards Council (FETAC). The course offered is a Level 3 in Employability Skills which prepares people gain skills and expertise to prepare for the workplace. Select computer related modules are also offered at Level 4.

Irish Water reiterates request for people on Inis Mór to conserve water

Irish Water has stressed the need to lower water usage on Inis Mór for the foreseeable future, due to the unseasonably dry weather conditions, resulting in historically low water levels for this time of year.

Water restrictions will be imposed on the island from 11pm to 7am daily commencing Monday, May 15. Irish Water has warned that should a dry spell continue they will have to consider extending the restrictions to day time hours.

City air pollution was fives times permitted limit as Cloosh Valley fire devastates forest and wildlife

Recently-installed air monitoring devices deployed in the city revealed last evening that a level FIVE times the normal rate of air pollution was exceeded on Tuesday evening when the city was engulfed in clouds of smoke from the devastating wildfire at Cloosh Valley in Connemara.

On the 23rd of September 2014, a little miracle was born in University Hospital, Galway. Juliet Smith was, at that point, Ireland’s most scanned baby according to her mother Gabrielle. The reason little Juliet was a miracle baby was because the condition that threatened to take her before she was born was so rare that it was a 1 in a million chance of occurrence. Gabrielle was told that her baby might not survive and that she should prepare for the worst.
