Galway woman Sinead McGowan has arrived home to Ireland after securing four medals in the World Transplant Games in Malaga last week.
The Renmore native won two golds in the 400m and triathlon and two silvers in the 1500m and 5k run.
McGowan who was competing at her third World Transplant Games, will be staying in Galway for the next few days before returning to Australia where she has lived and worked for the last 15 years.
Speaking about her success the athlete said; "I am very happy with the medals. I put in a lot of training and the results showed. I really enjoyed my time over in Malaga. It is always great fun with the Irish team because they are great bunch of people to be around and the team spirit is always something I draw from the week's experience."
Positive message
McGowan received a kidney from her brother in October 2009 and she said the games are "a showcase for organ donation".
She said; "Organ donation gives the recipient a new sense of life. The athletes who take part in these games demonstrate what the future can hold for people who may have suffered from organ failure and are waiting for a donation.
"It also conveys the positive message to people who are considering donating one of their organs what an brilliant impact it can have on someone else's life."
Malaga was McGowan's third games but the Galwegian says she fully intends to compete at the 2019 edition in Newcastle.
"I was thinking about retiring after these games, but the success gives you a great buzz and the urge to get back training so I will definitely be there in Newcastle in two years. But more importantly I thoroughly enjoy the week I spend with the Irish team, reconnecting with old friends and meeting newcomers. The success is great but the social aspect is the most important part for me."
