Galway and Rome film students join forces

Galway City of Film has announced a new partnership project with Rome City of Film to share knowledge and expertise among the filmmakers of the future.

Galway and Rome UNESCO offices are facilitating a new international student exchange programme between the Centre for Creative Arts and Media, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, and the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome.

Galway Food Festival attracts eighty thousand visitors

Alcoholics Anonymous convention in Salthill

Members of Alcoholics Anonymous from all over the island of Ireland, including members from across the UK and the US and beyond will be travelling to the Salthill Promenade Hotel, Galway to help celebrate the 60th Anniversary of the traditional annual Convention of AA, being held from April 20 to 23 2017.

Increasingly members from other countries have joined the Irish convention celebrations since the first AA Convention was organised in 1957. The said 1957 All-Ireland Convention marked 10 years of AA in Ireland, and AA recently marked its 70th birthday in November last and the fellowship has been celebrating the anniversary with various workshops and functions since then.

All that has changed with the advent of social media where people can share their thoughts, their beliefs, their stories, their past at will. But they can also share ignorant and offensive behaviour. Worse, this week people witnessed a recording of an American announcing to the public his plan to kill, before posting another of him shooting a victim dead, via Facebook.

When has it gone too far? Facebook, the fastest growing social networking site in the world, reacted to remove the material and Mark Zuckerburg pledged Facebook would do all it could to prevent such posts becoming more frequent.

Mac move is to stop trademark bullying says Supermacs’ chief

In a significant move in the ongoing trademark dispute between Supermac’s and fast food giant McDonald’s, Supermac’s has asked the EU regulator to cancel the use of the Big Mac trademark registered by McDonald’s under certain classes. The request has been formally submitted to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) by Supermac’s which has asked that it take effect immediately on the basis that McDonald’s is engaged in trademark bullying.

Galway youth organisations to benefit from €10.6 million of national funding

Minister of State Seán Kyne has this week said that youth groups across Galway will benefit from the €10.6 million of Government funding for national youth organisations.

The funding has been allocated by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs and will benefit organisations involved in sports, the arts, and outdoor pursuits. “Many of the national organisations receiving funding have a strong presence in Galway including Scouting Ireland, the Irish Girl Guides, Catholic Guides of Ireland, Macra na Feirme and Junior Chamber Ireland,” said Minister Kyne.
