Irish Water opens state-of-the-art new wastewater treatment plant in Glenamaddy

It was a historic occasion for Glenamaddy as Irish Water and Galway County Council officially opened a new state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plant following a €5 million euro investment. The new infrastructure ensures that treated wastewater is now fully compliant with EU Urban Wastewater Directives before being safely discharged back into the natural environment.

It’s been three years since the last Headfest, and the festival organisers are delighted to be back again, doing what they love—bringing music and fun to Headford’s June bank holiday weekend.

Our festival line up this year includes, Mike Denver with locals Break Free on Friday June 3, All Folk’d Up with another local act, The Shift, on Saturday June 4, and Johnny Brady with Ciaran Rosney on Sunday June 5. In addition to this, they have a family friendly music event under the Ceol an tSamhraidh banner, on Monday June 6, featuring Little John Nee, with Tara Stacey as support. This event is supported by Galway County Council Arts Office and funded through the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media Local Live Performance Scheme. *

Worrying increase in homelessness among young adults

Homeless charity Galway Simon Community has raised concerns as the latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government reveal that the number of young adults (18 – 24) living in Emergency Accommodation is growing faster than any other category, against a backdrop of rising rents and a deepening housing crisis. There were 481 people living in Emergency Accommodation across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon in April, an increase of 19% on the previous year. The increase in the number of young adults living in Emergency Accommodation in the same period was 44%.

Galway Simon established a dedicated Youth Service in 2016, in collaboration with Galway City Council and Tusla, to support young adults at risk of and experiencing homelessness. The Service currently provides a home for 12 young people at any one time, many of whom are care leavers, whilst also supporting others in the wider community.

Miss Earth Ireland, sponsored by FlameFit Gym, is the national selection for Miss Earth, one of the biggest beauty pageants in the world.

Grealish disappointed that bus fare cuts not extended to City Direct

Galway West TD Noel Grealish has expressed disappointment at the recent decision by the Government to not extend the reduction in bus fares to a company which offers public transport to thousands of Knocknacarra residents.

The Independent TD had highlighted the fact that there was now a 63 per cent difference in some fares between the privately-owned City Direct company and Bus Éireann services, when he tabled a Parliamentary Question calling for the Government-subsidised 20 per cent average reduction in Bus Éireann fares to be extended to cover all passengers.
