Improvement works to footpaths in Knocknacarra Park and The Rise have commenced.
The Galway City Council is lowering footpaths at junctions in both estates.
Cllr Donal Lyons said: “I had received a number of representations from residents who had expressed concerns regarding the accessibility and the height of footpaths at junctions along roads in the West Ward electoral area. Because of the height of some of the footpaths it is difficult for wheelchair users and for parents with prams and push chairs to access the high footpaths.
“A number of years ago, I was instrumental in having a Local Improvement Scheme (LIS ) adopted by the Galway City Council. Each member of Galway City Council is allocated a small amount of funding for works to be carried out in their area by the Roads Department and by the Recreation & Amenity Department.
“Over the last three Galway City Council Budgets, I have been allocating funding from the Local Improvement Scheme to carry out the work of lowering the footpaths in Knocknacarra Park and The Rise and other areas in the West Ward.”
Cllr Lyons is hopeful further work will be carried out in the area in the future. “The LIS funding has this week seen the completion of the lowering of paths in Knocknacarra Park and The Rise and I will continue to use the LIS funding to have footpaths lowered at other junctions in the West Ward area in the future,” he says.
“I want to thank the officials at Galway City Council Roads Department for their help in addressing my representations and carrying out the work.”
