A former Macnas stalwart and founding member of the Galway Cartoon Festival, Allan is a finalist in the Wedding Entertainment Supplier of the Year, Personalised Items Supplier of the Year, and Gifts and Favours Supplier of the Year categories.

Able to capture a face in under three minutes, last year Allan drew over 2,300 people and appeared in more than 60 venues at weddings and events all over Ireland.

The days of policing revolving around the idea of a garda living and waiting in the local station all day for a call are long gone, and there is no point in hankering for them, this week’s meeting of Galway County Council Joint Policing Committee was told.

In response to a call from Athenry councillor Shelley Herterich Quinn for a local sergeant ‘on tap’ to respond to the concerns of the locals, Chief Supt Gerry Roche said that that previous model of policing is not sustainable or safe.

Minister of State Hildegarde Naughton this week welcomed the allocation of funding in 2023 for Active Travel projects in Galway. “Dozens of projects in Galway city and county are set to receive targeted funding towards making walking and cycling in our villages and towns safe and sustainable,” she said.

Art installation giving voice to local women who experience domestic abuse set to tour the county

A new art installation, commissioned by Cope Galway Domestic Abuse Service to mark its 40th anniversary, is currently on the move to different parts of the county where the local charity provides outreach one-to-one sessions to women.

The sculptural work, titled We See You, We Hear You, can be viewed in Loughrea, Athenry, Gort and Clifden between now and March, with further locations expected to be added in the coming months. It will return to Galway city as part of Cope’s events to mark International Women’s Day on Wednesday, March 8.

The enormous lift of February

I am writing this on Wednesday evening as I return from the funeral of an old friend who died in the way that has come just too much the norm in the last while. The erosion of childhood memories leaves one deflated. There has been much death since the turn of the year, twenty per cent more this year that for the corresponding period last year.

For me, it is timely that Spring has happened upon us this week. I have a zest for early Spring — something that I have probably taken with me from childhood. As a child in Ballinrobe, I always had a great sense of the potential for hope that comes with the arrival of mid February. We had three wooden lake boats for fishing on Lough Mask, and every winter, they were upturned in our garden and allowed to hibernate against the harsh winds and rain while the fishing season remained shut. And then in late January, the boats would be turned again and the process of getting them ready for a new season would begin.
