“Ludicrous” is how the chairperson of the HSE West’s regional health forum has described the decision to expand the role of general manager of Galway University Hospital’s to include responsibility for Portiuncula and Roscommon hospitals.

Cllr Padraig Conneely says this controversial move, which is vehemently opposed by Ballinasloe people who fear their hospital will be downgraded in the process, will mean that UHG will not have a dedicated manager.

Gardai not hunting for gorse fire arsonist after Roundstone blazes

Gardai in Galway have dismissed reports that they are hunting for an arsonist suspected of deliberately setting fire to hundreds of acres of gorse in Connemara over the past few days.

In response to reports in a national paper, a spokesperson for Galway Garda station confirmed that there had been gorse fires over vast areas of mountainside near Roundstone in Connemara but that no complaint has been made and that gardai have not launched an official investigation into the matter.
