Cllr Niall Mc Nelis has welcomed the announcement of changes to the HAP scheme but says it is no substitute for building homes.

Following months of campaigning for the revision of the HAP scheme, Cllr Mc Nelis said: “People in Galway are really struggling and renters in particular are experiencing the hard end of the increased cost of living. Rents have soared in Galway city and county over the last five years so the announcement of a change to the HAP scheme is hugely welcome.

Funding boost for remote working hubs in city and county

Remote working in the community got a boost yesterday when the Government announced a series of new initiatives to support remote working, including a voucher scheme that will give workers free access to local digital hubs.

To facilitate this, almost €370,000 was granted to remote working hubs in Galway city and county to enable them to become part of the National Hub Network. Works in the Galway hubs will include the expansion of existing hubs, installation of privacy booths, access control and security systems, the conversion of existing open plan space to modular offices, and provision of podcast studios, enhanced audio visual, networking and conferencing facilities.

Worrying increase in homelessness among young adults

Homeless charity Galway Simon Community has raised concerns as the latest figures released by the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government reveal that the number of young adults (18 – 24) living in Emergency Accommodation is growing faster than any other category, against a backdrop of rising rents and a deepening housing crisis. There were 481 people living in Emergency Accommodation across Galway, Mayo and Roscommon in April, an increase of 19% on the previous year. The increase in the number of young adults living in Emergency Accommodation in the same period was 44%.

Galway Simon established a dedicated Youth Service in 2016, in collaboration with Galway City Council and Tusla, to support young adults at risk of and experiencing homelessness. The Service currently provides a home for 12 young people at any one time, many of whom are care leavers, whilst also supporting others in the wider community.

Grealish disappointed that bus fare cuts not extended to City Direct

Galway West TD Noel Grealish has expressed disappointment at the recent decision by the Government to not extend the reduction in bus fares to a company which offers public transport to thousands of Knocknacarra residents.

The Independent TD had highlighted the fact that there was now a 63 per cent difference in some fares between the privately-owned City Direct company and Bus Éireann services, when he tabled a Parliamentary Question calling for the Government-subsidised 20 per cent average reduction in Bus Éireann fares to be extended to cover all passengers.
