Hike in student registration fees a real danger warn SU and McNelis

Third level fees might not be about to be reintroduced but that does not mean there will not be a hike in registration fees, which will make education more highly expensive than it already is.

These are the concerns being expressed by both the NUI Galway Students Union and Labour councillor Niall McNelis, following the news that third level fees will not be reintroduced as part of the Programme for Government between Fianna Fáil and The Greens.

Bus Éireann to run trial Carna to Galway service

Bus Éireann has agreed to run a Carna to Galway city commuter bus on a trial basis to service workers commuting to the city according to Fianna Fáil Galway West TD Frank Fahey.

The Government has made a commitment to explore the provision of a full-scale transport system in rural areas using the network expertise of Bus Éireann, the physical infrastructure, personal resources of the school transport system, and the financial resources currently being spent on transport by the HSE and the Department of Education.

The Village Nursing Care Centre will hold an information day in the coming weeks on the new Nursing Home Support Scheme. The scheme, commonly referred to as Fair Deal, was first announced by Minister for Health Mary Harney at the official opening of The Village Nursing Care Centre in February 2006.

The Nursing Home Support scheme is a new scheme of financial support for people who need long-term nursing home care. Fair Deal will replace the existing nursing home subvention scheme and will commence on October 27 2009. Under this scheme individuals will contribute 80 per cent of their assessable income and 5 per cent of the value of any assets per annum; the HSE will then pay the balance of the cost of care.
