BELFAST FLUTE player Desi Wilkinson has been one of Irish trad’s leading exponents for more than three decades. Wilkinson was raised in the shadow of The Troubles in the 1970s and was drawn to music as a means of release from the horrors of war.

Ulster has produced many fine flute players over the years and Desi learned his craft directly from the masters of the tradition such as Tom Gunn and James McMahon.

The concert will feature Alec Finn, Johnny ‘Ringo’ McDonagh, Eleanor Shanley, Jackie Daly, Andrew Murray, Derek Hickey, Mick Conneelly, John Carty, Brian McGrath, John Faulkner, Colm Murray, and Aidan Coffey.

Loughrea to go Wilde for Oscar

OSCAR WILDE’S comic masterpiece, The Importance Of Being Earnest, will be performed by The Seamas O’Kelly Players in the Temperance Hall, Loughrea, today, Saturday, and Sunday at 8.30pm.

Set in Victorian England, the play's humour derives in part from characters maintaining fictitious identities to escape unwelcome social obligations. It is directed by John Boland.

ABBEY ACTOR Declan Conlon will read from the Loughrea Creative Writing Group’s new edition of its yearly anthology Razzle Dazzle.

The book, edited by author and broadcaster Liam Nolan, will be launched in Loughrea Library on Monday at 7.30pm. Mr Conlon, whose family comes from Loughrea, is best known for his roles as Turlough Norris in Fair City and Mendosa in The Tudors.
