Five tips to make a job interview more ‘real’

Thu, Oct 13, 2022

Q: I often find interviews stilted or impersonal. I struggle to bring the real me into the room. It’s like listening to a recording of myself. Any tips on how to make interviews more real? (CG, email).

A: A good interview panel should relax you to the point that the ‘real’ you emerges – but we can’t presume the interview panel will be good, so you’ve got to make it happen yourself – which is, essentially, the thrust of your question. Here are five tips:

A smart move – or back into the fire?

Thu, Oct 06, 2022

Q: I’m going for a job in a company that I regard very highly. However, the position I am chasing is not at the level I would want – or, perhaps more to the point, not in the area of the business I would like. I think this is a philosophical question, as opposed to something harder edged: should I go for the job and take it if I get it just to make my way into the company, or will that go against me somewhere down the line in there? (SC, email).

A: It is indeed a philosophical question and can therefore only be answered in a similar vein. In theory, I don’t have much difficulty with you attempting to take this step to get in the door, if, in so doing, you put yourself in position to capitalise down the line – but only, and this is important, if the value of getting into the company outweighs the value of anything you might achieve working elsewhere.

Should I go for face-to-face or online interview?

Thu, Sep 29, 2022

Q: I have been offered the choice of face-to-face or online for the interview. I dislike interviews at the best of times and I’m finding it hard to say which one I prefer. I have a good chance of getting the job as I have the experience they require, but I struggle to get the information across. I wonder which option will give me the better chance. What would you do?

A: This is a simple way of asking a complex question. In an ideal world, I would go for a face-to-face interview. It makes the task of building rapport easier. it allows you to bring more of your personality into the interview and it also forces you into the zone.
