Google has a special projects task force that keep their eyes and ears open for new projects to watch and develop. Last week, three of the GSP (Google Special Projects) team flew into Galway to to meet some local startups, like Colmac Robotics, in Startlab in Eyre Square. They loved the energy and innovation they found.

Since Minister Noonan announced in October 2014 that Ireland would introduce a “best-in-class” Knowledge Development Box (“KDB”), there has been a lot of speculation about ‘how low would he go’. Budget 2016 announced that the rate of tax which will apply for income qualifying under the new KDB will be 6.25%. The relief is available to companies for accounting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2016.
The objective of the KDB is to provide a preferential tax rate for income generated from commercialising R&D / Intellectual Property (“IP”). While new to Ireland, “patent box” measures have existed for many years in other countries, with, for example, the UK having a Patent Box rate of 10%.

Smarter Surfaces is an Irish based company which manufactures a range of award-winning paints and wallpapers including whiteboard paint and magnetic paint.
Managing director Ronan Clarke developed the idea for the business while working in the construction industry in 2009. He had a request from a client to build a white board room. Discovering that there was no inexpensive or easy way to make one, he looked for a solution, and came up with the idea of creating a paint to turn a wall into a whiteboard.

FIVE Gala convenience stores from throughout Mayo have been awarded the Gold Standard for excellence in retail at the 2015 Gala Annual Conference and BEST Awards, which took place last week at The Malton Hotel, Killarney.
The Gold Standard is awarded following a comprehensive and independent assessment process under the Gala Business Excellence Standards Tool programme. The awards ceremony was MC’d by Lorraine Keane with special guests on the night including Pat Falvey, adventurer, and athletes from Special Olympics Ireland.

AIB has announced a five year partnership with Galway City Innovation District (GCID), a new initiative supporting start-ups and business innovation in Galway City and the West of Ireland. The initiative brings together Galway Chamber of Commerce, Galway City Council, NUIG and GMIT to form the GCID.
Initially AIB is sponsoring the PorterShed, the first building to be opened as part of the GCID initiative, which is located close to Eyre Square. The PorterShed will house an accelerator programme, high potential start-ups and entrepreneurs as well as providing co-working space and an open area for workshops and seminars. It is expected to open early next year.

Bank of Ireland is calling on all local start-ups to enter the Bank of Ireland Startup Awards 2015 — as the closing date for entries has been extended to Thursday, September 17 This is the second year that the Bank is sponsoring the awards which are open to start-up companies across Ireland.
This year there are 11 award categories which recognise and reward Irish startups for their success in business across a range of sectors including digital, food and drink, retail and technology. The awards also include a Grand Prix award for the startup of the year and a Startup Hero award. Last year there was over 750 entries for the awards, the winner of the Grand Prix award was Agile Networks and the Irish Biz Party won the Startup Hero Award, highlighting the many different companies across all sectors that enter the awards. This year a new category has been added to the awards to recognise the significant contribution made by those who come to Ireland to set up their business - the Overseas Startup Setting Up in Ireland Award.
