Some 200 cyclists are due to arrive in Galway tomorrow (Friday ) evening as they complete a day-long cycle from Co Kildare in aid of the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital.
The annual cycle will see students from St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, travel west to raise funds for the charity Friends of the Coombe.
The charity is working to develop hospice-style bereavement suites for parents at the hospital.
Cyclist will leave Maynooth University Campus at 6.30am tomorrow and arrive in Eyre Square at around 5.30pm, having spent the day travelling some 190km.
The cyclists aim to raise €120,000 for the charity.
Since it was first established in 1987 by a group of students at St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, the annual Galway Cycle has covered more than 12,000km of road and raised in excess of €1.5 million for a host of children’s charities.
This year’s charity partnership was inspired by the story of baby Tom Fahey, who died as a result of a chromosomal abnormality when he was just 11 days old.
It was the compassionate care that baby Tom and his family received from the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital that moved Maynooth-based parents Sarah and Terry Fahey to nominate the charity for this year’s Galway Cycle partnership.
