Celebration for Chick to be launched on Monday

A concert, golf am-am and testimonial soccer match will form part of a series of events to celebrate Galway soccer legend, the late Eamonn Deacy.

The highlight of the events, named The Celebration For Chick series, will be special testimonial fixture at which former teammates from both Galway United and West United will line out against Deacy’s former colleagues from Aston Villa at the newly named Deacy Park on August 18.

The day before (August 17 ) golfers will tee off in a two-day golf am-am at the Galway Bay Golf Resort in Oranmore, while a special concert in Monroe’s will kick start the events on June 15. This range of events will be launched in Monroe’s on Dominick Street next Monday (May 14 at 8pm ) at which Greg and Mary Cotter, and Johnny Mullins will play.

The June 15 concert will be headlined by Silkwood and will feature a range of Galway musicians such as Don Stiffe, Rob Wade and Fionnuala Deacy. Tickets for the concert cost €10 and are available from Monroe’s, as well as TicketMaster.

The second event in the celebration series is the golf am-am on Friday August 17 and Saturday August 18. Teams of four cost €250, with a number of prizes to be won. To book a tee-time, call Michael McLaughlin at Future Wealth & Protection 091-549000.

The main event, the testimonial game, also takes place on Saturday August 18 at which Terryland Park will officially be renamed after the popular football icon who passed away suddenly in February.

A number of Eamonn’s teammates from the Aston Villa league-winning squad from the 1981/82 season are travelling for the game, and they will take on a special Galway United/West United selection.

The full squads will be announced closer to the day, but organisers have confirmed the Galway United XI will feature Jimmy Nolan, Gerry Daly, Denis Bonner, Derek Rogers, Mickey McLaughlin, Terry O’Regan, Jarlath Keating, Peter Carpenter, Johnny Glynn and John Mannion, while the West United XI will feature Mike, Joe and Mark O’Toole, along with Ger O’Connell, Noel Flaherty, Tommy Keane and Noel Mernagh.

Tickets for the game cost €10 for adults, €5 for children, and will be on sale at a number of outlets through the city and county which will be announced at next Monday’s official launch night.
