ANYONE WHO caught the band’s mesmerising winter acoustic tour would be already familiar with some of the new material featured on Bloodless Coup.
For everyone else, Bell X1’s fifth album, yet again, brings the band in a new direction. Never failing to outdo themselves, the trio have come up with an album that contains the usual heart pounding swells of music and vocals (‘Hey Anna Lena’ ) and cheeky lyrics and reflections (‘Sugar High’ ).
Already a firm favourite with radio DJs, ‘Velcro’ is a reliable reminder of what makes Bell X1 a great studio band. There is something about their real life observations that makes Bell X1 songs so addictive, and ‘Velcro’ is a perfect example of this: “Now we’re clacking at computers, in the sickly light they throw. All jonesing for wi-fi, so we can steal more TV shows.”
If you are a Bell X1 fan, you will be a Bloodless Coup fan. Perhaps a little more electronic than other albums, it is still as addictive and memorable as any other album they have released.
No doubt by Galway Races time we'll all be singing ‘Sugar High’
