Local Election Candidate for Galway City East, Shane Forde, has called on Galway City Council and its Active Travel Department to take immediate action on the two Bus Stops opposite the ATU on the Dublin Road.

Mr Forde has asked that “works, or at the very minimum a timeline for works be put in place on these two Bus Shelters in the short term in order to avoid an accident waiting to happen”.

He believes the location of the two bus stops are highly dangerous for both road users and pedestrians.

“The Current Bus Stops are located too close to the Roundabout opposite the old Corrib Great Southern Hotel and it is highly dangerous for passengers disembarking busses coming from the direction of Dublin who are being collected by family members or friends.

According to Mr Forde “cars that are collecting passengers off busses are pulling up in the bus lanes and traffic is getting backed up in both directions”

“The City Council should engage with ATU about the possibility of acquiring some land along the road so that busses can park safely on both sides of the road to allow passengers disembark safely and also facilitate uninterrupted passage for vehicles using the bus corridors”.

“This is an issue that has been raised multiple times with me whilst out canvassing for the upcoming Local Election,” he said.
