Galway City Corpus Christi Procession to travel over new bridge

To mark the Feast of Corpus Christi on Sunday June 11, a Eucharistic Procession will take place in Galway City and its route will include the new Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge.

People are invited to gather for Mass at the Abbey Church on Francis Street at 3pm. Participants will then walk in procession via the newly opened Salmon Weir Pedestrian and Cycle Bridge, with the recitation of the rosary, the singing of hymns and concluding with Benediction at the Poor Clare Monastery on Nun’s Island.

Organizers hope that many Galway residents and visitors will participate in this traditional ritual of worship and thanksgiving by prayerfully and joyfully walking the procession route.

In recent comments, Fr John Gerard Acton of Galway Cathedral, said that this is a very positive celebration of public devotion in our City.

“It has very deep roots in Ireland and beyond. Prayers will be offered giving thanks to God for his loving presence in all our lives through the Eucharist and asking for his ongoing grace, peace, healing and forgiveness,” he said.

Sr Colette, Mother Abbess of the Poor Clare Community, said that the incorporation of a new pedestrian and cycle bridge into the Corpus Christi procession route adds symbolic significance as well.

“Bridges are often seen as symbols of connection, unity, and transition.

“By passing over the bridge, the procession participants can symbolise their spiritual journey, crossing over from one state or place to another, or reinforcing the idea of unity and community as they come together to celebrate their faith.”
