Declan O'Rourke - in concert at the Town Hall

Acclaimed songwriter expected to premiere new songs at Galway show

HIS SONGS have been covered by Christy Moore, Eddi Reader, and Josh Groban, and he has earned the praise of Paul Weller and Dubliners legend John Sheahan. He is Declan O'Rourke.

O'Rourke, who was born in Dublin, but is now based in Kinvara, will play the Town Hall Theatre on Thursday November 28 at 8pm. He will perform songs from across his career, as well as some recently composed tracks.

Nominated for best singer, and winner of the first award for ‘Best Original Song’, at the inaugural RTÉ Folk Awards in 2018, O’Rourke has appeared on the BBC’s Transatlantic Sessions alongside Alison Krauss and RTÉ's Other Voices. John Sheahan declared recently that, “after 50 years I have decided it’s time to put a lid on The Dubliners’ but I’m sure you’ll all agree that with Declan, and Damien Dempsey, the future is in good hands.”

Indeed, as Jon Pareles in The New York Times wrote: "Compassion, romance, a sense of mortality and a sense of history runs through the songs of Declan O’Rourke. The gravity of the deliberation in their melodies, their calmly sustained phrases, their fatalistic undertone — informs his songs, whether they’re about faithful love or reckoning with elemental forces — his calling is a balladeer, proffering re-assurance in the face of inevitable sorrow."
