TINARIWEN, THE Grammy-winning Saharan blues band, make a welcome return to the city to play the Galway International Arts Festival's Heineken Big Top in the Fisheries Field on Tuesday July 16 at 7pm.
From Mali, west Africa, the band, whose members come from the Tuareg people, a large Berber ethnic confederation, have been praised by The Irish Times for the "stunning heart and soul" of their music. Similarly, The Guardian has saluted their "great soul and prowess".
Founded in 1979 in Tureg camps in Libya, where they were exposed to Western music, they created an a stunning combination of electric guitar rock with traditional forms of music from northwest Africa. Since then they have toured internationally to great public and critical acclaim; won Best Group in the Songlines Music Awards in 2012 and a Grammy for Best World Music Album in the same year; they have released seven albums, and their eighth, Amajdar, is out later this year.
