Students target podium finish intervarsities

NUIG is sending strong teams to this Saturday's Intervarsities Cross Country Championships at the national cross country course in Abbotstown, Dublin.

Men’s captain Andrew O Donnghaile will be targeting a top 10 finish in the 8km race, while Aisling Joyce and Niamh Hennelly are also expected to feature prominently in the ladies' event over 5km. And if NUIG are looking to be on the podium, they will also need strong runs from squad members Colm Kirke and Michelle Maher.

The Galway champions found it really hard to find any rhythm for the first 45 minutes with Ballyea bossing proceedings around the middle, and the 2013 All-Ireland club champions found themselves 1-17 to 1-5 behind with about 10 minutes left on the clock.

Ballyhea defeated Glen Rovers (Cork) in their provincial final before Christmas, winning by 1-21 to 2-10, with Clare’s 2013 Hurler of the Year, Tony Kelly in tremendous form.
