Galway city’s Budget day is tomorrow

While the State endured Brian Lenihan’s savage Budget yesterday, Galway will have to wait until tomorrow before the Galway City Council decides on its own budget for 2010.

The council’s Statutory Annual Budget Meeting takes place tomorrow in City Hall, College Road, at 3pm. At the meeting, councillors will be asked to consider the Draft Annual Budget 2010 before voting on it. They will also be asked to vote on whether or not to increase the rates for the coming year.

Johnny Carroll launches autobiography

Johnny Carroll, popularly known as ‘the man with the golden trumpet’, has just published his autobiography Oh Mein Papa, recounting his 50 plus years in the music business.

Johnny, originally from Castlerea, began playing the trumpet in public at 13 and from that point on has never looked back. He played with The Premier Arcs and The Magic Band showbands, before releasing his debut solo album A Touch Of Class, the first of many such successful records.

These people were above reproach of any kind and were and are a credit to their professions. Their colleagues and their superiors have failed these priests and many more like them. Their legacy has been tarnished by a systemic cover-up of crimes of such magnitude that they are the subject of scrutiny and comment all over the world.

Charity Christmas cards for Malawi

Zikomo, a local charity dedicated to fostering long-term self sufficiency of rural communities in southern Malawi, has launched this years selection of fundraising Christmas cards. A small team from Galway have been developing this community to community link since 2002. Four NUIG graduates returned this autumn from Malawi having completed the building of a second community centre. The furnishing and equipping of this centre will be completed thanks to the €1,200 raised by the university choir and orchestra. In addition, with the help of the Galway County Council, Zikomo can now also install a solar panel on one of the community centres. Through the sale of the new range of Christmas cards Zikomo hopse to install a second solar panel. Card collections contain four photos by award winning photographer Pat O'Connor, and Malawian artist Martin Mchekeya. Cards are available in Dubray bookshop, Clarenbridge Antiques, Charlie Byrne’s, and Evergreen Healthfoods in the Galway shopping centre.
