New exhibition to look at everyday lives and kitchen scenes

An art project, which documented the everyday lives of people in Fána Burca and provided instruction for residents in digital video, photography, animation, and web-based media, will be launched next week.

The Kitchen Sessions, a new public art project by Michael Fortune, will be officially launched by the Mayor of Galway councillor Declan McDonnell at the Galway Arts Centre, 47 Dominick Street, on Thursday December 17 at 7pm.

The guest speaker will be Jenny Haughton, public art advisor for the Arts Council. The exhibition was commissioned by the Galway City Council through the Per Cent for Art Programme.

The Kitchen Sessions began in 2008 when Fána Burca residents were invited to join the artist in learning digital video, photography, animation, and web-based media, and in turn to share and articulate their personal experiences of their homes on the estate.

Following this open call, a group of five families and friends came together to work with Mr Fortune. This resulted in the production of a limited number publication which documents the stories of each family’s life, mapped through conversations and observations of the objects in their homes as well as in their everyday lives.

The Kitchen Sessions publication is available for free by contacting Megs Morley, public arts officer, Galway City Council, College Road, 091 - 536400, or emailing [email protected]

It is also available to download from www.michaelfortune.ie and www.thekitchensessions.ie and Mr Fortune will host a YouTube festival in the Fána Burca estate on Friday 18 and Saturday 19.
