Voters elect TDs to legislate on behalf of the State and to advocate for the needs of their constituency, but are we, the taxpayers, getting any value for our vote?
Whatever you might say about their work or achievements, there is no doubt that Galway’s nine TDs have an excellent attendance record with most of them turning up for more than 85 per cent of all votes in the Dáil.

A Claregalway school was last night thanking its lucky stars after serious injuries were averted when a 20-ton juggernaut left the road and ploughed into the schoolgrounds just as infants were being collected after school.

The scene of devastation that was left in the grounds of Cregmore NS, near Claregalway yesterday, was an indication of just how close this was to being a terrible tragedy involving a massive loss of life. According to reports, children were pulled out of the way of the oncoming truck as it ploughed from the road and through the school boundary, ending up destroying several cars. It was a scenario of potentially horrific proportions that happened as schoolchildren were being collected by their parents.

A jury in the trial of a man accused of setting fire to a block of flats in the UK killing two young jockeys, including Claregalway native Jamie Kyne, has heard that he sent “creepy” text messages to a teenage girl and had committed the arson attack as an act of revenge.

Parents can learn how to help their children in the run up to the Junior and Leaving Certificate exams by attending a special lecture on the subject to be held next month.
Professor Fiona McNicholas, a Dublin based consultant and adolescent psychiatrist, will speak at the event, which is being organised by Atlantic College, a continuing education facility based at the Fairgreen. The new Bus Marketing Strategy for Galway will “ultimately lead to an increase in public transport usage in the city” according to Fine Gael councillor Brian Walsh.
