Planning permission has been granted to Galway city’s Ahmadiyya Muslim community to build a mosque at The Cottages, Monivea Road, Ballybrit.
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Association of Ireland applied for permission to the Galway City Council to develop a mosque and cultural centre at the rear of an existing house and to extend it as ancillary residential accommodation.
The development will consist of a single storey mosque with part raised roof level of a two storey height and associated dome and minaret to accommodate a prayer hall, circulation areas, toilets, and two office rooms; ancillary storage area; provision of access road and car parking; alterations to the dwelling house to provide for a rear extension; and additional first floor bedroom; and on-site services.
Independent councillor Terry O’Flaherty has welcomed the grant of planning permission, saying it is good news for the Ahmadiyya community.
