The 200 strong staff at Galway’s Aviva operations face an uncertain Christmas after the company announced 950 redundancies yesterday. Aviva employs more than 2,000 people at facilities in Galway, Dublin, and Cork, as well as 26 branches around the country, but no specific details relating to each location were disclosed. The redundancy programme will commence in March 2012 and could take up to two years.

Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) held a ‘Go Racing Kids’ Club’ Day at Galway Racecourse on Tuesday when 288 fifth and sixth class pupils from five local schools took part in demonstrations from RACE (Racing Academy and Centre of Education) and heard talks from jockey Derek O’Connor and local trainer Pauline Gavin and her daughter Sarah.
Pauline Gavin brought along a horse called Lillymile which won a maiden hurdle at Ballinrobe last month, and a pony called Rodney.

An 11-month-old girl has returned to Galway after a lifesaving liver transplant in London proved successful. Ieva Zukaskuate of Rahoon received a graft from her mother’s liver during a complex operation at King’s Cross Hospital. After complications which included two leaks in a valve and a subsequent infection, Ieva was allowed to return home this week.
