A man accused of killing New Zealand photographer and former Galway resident Trent Keegan in Kenya in 2008 has been acquitted following a trial in Nairobi.
Hesbon Amadade was found not guilty earlier this month.
Mr Keegan, a professional photographer who had lived and worked for a number of newspapers in Galway for some years before travelling to Kenya, was found beaten to death in a drainage ditch in the capital on May 28 2008.
Amadade was charged in relation to the killing last year. Mr Keegan's family was told last month that a magistrate had decided Amadade had a case to answer. Amadade was later acquitted due to lack of evidence as the police did not recover Mr Keegan's cell phone, the only physical evidence that could link him to the crime.
Amadade remains in jail charged with the murder of a Kenya Airways pilot in 2010, two years after Keegan's killing.
In 2009 two men charged with robbery in relation to Mr Keegan’s murder were also acquitted by a Nairobi court.
Trent Keegan (33 ) was a respected photojournalist who received several awards from the Irish Professional Photographers’ Association and had worked around the world in places such as Darfur, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and the slums of Mombasa. He had moved to Kenya just three months before his death.
