The Director of Cara International — a local au pair and work and travel agency based in west of Ireland — Caroline Joyce, has recently secured a contract with RTÉ to film an au pair/family placement in a serious called Find Me a Family. This au pair would need to be starting in a family in November.

Artist Aileen Lambert is currently rambling around various highways and byways in the Knock, Ballindine, and Ballyhaunis areas of the county as part of her research for a new public art project commissioned by Mayo County Council and is looking for people to assist her in her research; she is particularly interested in speaking with people who have local knowledge of old walking paths and routes in the area.

“Law and order is on the verge of breaking down in the county,” according to Swinford councillor Joe Mellett, while Belmullet councillor Gerry Coyle said that “thugs should be put behind bars”. These were just some of the indignant comments made by councillors at Monday afternoon’s county council meeting after a motion was put forward by Fine Gael councillor Michael Burke for the council to call on the Minister for Justice to provide more gardaí in Mayo, to fight the ongoing crime and anti social behaviour.

An Taoiseach Brian Cowen has expressed positive assurance to Mayo Fianna Fáil TD Beverley Flynn that the Government is fully aware of the importance of the N5. The Taoiseach told the Fianna Fáil deputy that he and the Minister for Transport would do everything possible to help maintain jobs and develop manufacturing opportunities in the west.

A Brazilian native who pleaded guilty to two charges under the Immigration Act has been given a month to leave the country or he will have a conviction issued against him, and will be deported, was given a month to get together enough money to fly home at Claremorris District Court this week.

Independent councillor Frank Durcan blasted “blatant inconsistencies “in planning in the county and called on Mayo County Council to adopt “a common sense approach” in dealing with all planning applications; that they are dealt with as quickly as possible and that “persons should be able to construct a family home in the location of their choice subject to normal planning conditions”.
