The Galway minors, under the guidance of Clonbur’s Stephen Joyce, face a massive game this Sunday in McHale Park at 2.30pm when they take on the home team in the first round of the Connacht championship.

The losers on Sunday are out and there is no back door at this stage of the championship so it is a really big game for all the youngsters involved in both squads.

Gerry Fahy’s charges will be hoping to bring the All-Ireland title back to the county for the first time since 2013, and if they can replicate the terrific performance they produced against Kerry in the semi-final, they will not be too far away from doing just that.

Saturday evening at Cusack Park in Ennis at 5.45pm was a fantastic place to be for a Galway football supporter.

Gerry Fahy's side had just beaten a highly-rated Kerry outfit by 2-14 to 2-10 to advance to the All Ireland final. The margin of victory could have been even greater for the Galway players, if they had been a bit more clinical at stages in the first half.

The Galway U21s, under the guidance of Gerry Fahy, had a sensational 3-20 to 2-14 win over Sligo after extra time at Markievicz Park on Sunday.

At one stage in the first half Galway found themselves behind by 1-7 to 0-2, and that kind of a poor start cannot be repeated when they face a very highly rated Kerry in the semi-final on Saturday week (April 15). The venue has yet to be decided, but will probably be Limerick. Dublin will face the Ulster champions in the other semi-final.

After Galway's solid 3-15 to 1-13 victory over Down at Páirc Esler in round six of the league, manager Kevin Walsh said Galway had been in division two for the past six or seven years because they had not been good enough, or consistent enough, to play in the top flight.

It was that simple. League tables do not lie, and while a team may be unlucky one season or another, Galway's lack of consistency in league football over the past four or five years is the reason they have not gone up the elevator to division one.

The Galway hurlers face Derek McGrath's Waterford this Sunday in the league quarter-finals at 4pm in Pearse Stadium.

Galway and Waterford had to toss a coin to decide which side would enjoy home advantage, and luckily Galway won. It sets up an attractive double header with the footballers who play at 2pm and should see a good crowd rock up to Salthill to support both county sides.

Footballers' inconsistent form is costing points

The Galway footballers left a valuable league point or two behind them at the weekend when they went down to Meath in Navan by 1-13 to 0-15 in round four of the NFL.

The visitors led by three points with 10 minutes remaining after producing some good football, but they did not push on and a late Meath goal scuppered their chances of collecting any points.
