The fifth and final round of group games in the Senior A and B hurling championships always provide drama aplenty, and this year was no different after a gripping weekend’s action.

Senior A Group 2 always looked likely to provide the most thrills, with all six sides harbouring hopes of qualification. And so it turned out with Sarsfields and Loughrea earning a direct passage through to the quarter-finals, with Gort and Cappataggle claiming places in the preliminary quarter-finals.

Diarmuid Mulkerrrins beat Jerome Cahill (Tipperary) 21-14 6-21 21-6 in the U21 semi-final held in Moycullen, while Salthill's Willie Corcoran covercame Tipperary's Martin Ryan to progress in the Emerald Masters B singles held in Ballina, Tipperary.

Galway two men’s Superleague basketball sides continue their preparations for the new season when they compete in the second annual Donie Greene Memorial Tournament in Oranmore this weekend.

Maree are hosting the tournament in memory of their former player, Donie Greene, and they will open proceedings with a derby game against Moycullen in Calasanctius College at 10am in what will be a dress rehearsal for their meeting the following Saturday on the first weekend of the Basketball Ireland Superleague season.
