NUI Galway study discovers novel approach to tackle bowel cancer

Scientists from the Regenerative Medicine Institute in the School of Medicine at NUI Galway, in collaboration with Queen’s University Belfast, have found a new function for normal cells, called stromal cells, within tumours that point the way in better understaning and preciction of response to immunotherapy. The study has been published in the internationally renowned journal, Cancer Immunology Research.

The Galway City Local Community Development Committee has approved grants totalling €139,701 to a wide range of local groups and organisations in the city under the Community Enhancement Programme for 2018 and the Men’s Shed fund.

It seemed they were going to have to come up with something ingenious to grasp defeat from the jaws of victory. The school first opened its doors to pupils in 1968 and, for the last fifty years, has given an excellent service in education to communities in Athenry and the surrounding parishes. In 2019, when the school community moves to a new 1000 pupil building, it will undoubtedly continue to build on this proud tradition.

Swiss visitor dies as Storm Ali batters Galway

A Swiss woman in her fifties lost her life in an incident in Claddaghduff early yesterday morning as Storm Ali bore down on the country. The woman, who is understood to have been visiting the region, was staying in a caravan at Acton’s Beach in Claddaghduff when the structure was blown down a 20ft drop.
