It has been an ugly start to the New Year. As the first month draws to a close, we are not filled with the optimism that comes with the unfurling of the daffodil blooms; our hearts are not pumped with the warmth of the setting sun that stays with us just a little longer every day. The spring that should drag us out of the end in the morning is less taut, as the realities of the days ahead and past sit on our chests.

It has been a period where the absolute horrors have been visited upon us with the shocking and brutal deaths of so many young people, caught up in situations not of their own making. The deaths of those small children in Dublin, the horror of Drogheda, the stabbings, the attacks around the country. The seeming futility of truth and consequence in world affairs.

Councillors criticise extra funding request by Galway 2020

The request of an extra €2.5 million in funding by Galway 2020 from the Galway City Council has been criticised by city councillors.

The project officially launches on Saturday February 8 at an event in South Park, Claddagh, councillors were asked to grant €1.25 million in 2021 and 2022 in order to facilitate the delivery of additional programme elements in the city and the development of legacy initiatives at a special meeting on Monday at City Hall.

The results of a TG4/Ipsos MRBI constituency poll carried out for ‘Vóta 2020’ programme shows a real dog-fight is in prospect in Galway West, with all five sitting TDs and as many as five other candidates all in contention to be elected. The quota in Galway West is 17%, and although no one candidate has enough first preference votes to reach the quota according to the poll, the competition will be fierce for the five seats.
