Michael Moloney has been living and breathing Galway Racecourse for many years now. When he was knee high to a grasshopper, he used to cycle around the course, while his father John, looked after the running of the course. Now, so many years on, Michael still thinks of Ballybrit as a back garden rather than a workplace, such is his passion for that patch of ground that heaves mightily every year and reverberates the Galway economy.

New book chronicles turbulent decade in North Galway

A new book which chronicles the revolutionary decade in North Galway will be launched in Tuam next month. Written by local GP Dr. Jarlath Deignan who is a member of the Old Tuam Society, the book discusses the various episodes that occurred during the pursuit of Irish freedom from a local perspective, including the Great War, Easter 1916, the War of Independence, the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the Civil War.

The region of North Galway witnessed significant events in all phases of the revolutionary period and is described by the author as a microcosm of the country as a whole.

GMIT women’s entrepreneurship programme to expand to Sligo, Donegal, and Leitrim

EMPOWER, the women’s entrepreneurship programme delivered in GMIT’s Innovation Hubs to women in Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon, has been allocated over €300,000 in funding to extend delivery of the successful programme to counties Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim.

The funding is part of an overall €1.5m budget allocation to promote gender equality and migrant integration announced earlier this week by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Charlie Flanagan, and David Stanton, Minister of State at the Department of Justice and Equality with responsibility for Integration, Immigration and Equality, for a total of five female entrepreneurship projects providers across the country.

Local mental health researchers seek participants for groundbreaking psychology therapy study

Researchers from the School of Psychology at NUI Galway are currently recruiting participants from ages 16-35 in the Galway area to participate in a new psychology therapy study being trialed for individuals who are in the first five years of a diagnosis of psychosis. Early psychosis, which refers to a range of mental health difficulties often associated with experiences of hallucinations or delusions, can result in significant difficulties with social and occupational functioning.

And so to wintertime. In a year when the seasons seemed in a hurry to pass one another out, we reach the stage where the clocks go back, where darkness becomes our constant companion, there when we leave home in the morning, there to greet us in the evening.

It is as if we are cocooned inside a large tea-cosy — slowly descending, preventing us from living our lives the way we want to. Everything seems much more of an effort in winter. Roads and paths are slippery, getting out and about to do the things we want is more involved. The escapes that you create for yourself in summer and spring are temporarily sidelined.
