Additional adult flu vaccines will not go far enough, says TD

An additional 200,000 adult flu vaccines for the forthcoming flu season is well short of what is needed, according to TD Denis Naughten.

The Roscommon/Galway Independent TD says the HSE is falling short with its plans to purchase only 200,000 adult flu vaccines despite the pressure this could place on Ireland's health system over the winter months.

Galway cyclists call for lower speed limits

Galway needs to follow the example of Wales and decrease its speed limits for urban areas from 50km/h to 30km/h, that is the opinion of the chairperson of Galway Cycling Campaign, Kevin Jennings.

The city council is currently in the process of a public consultation about revising speed limit bye-laws throughout the city and Mr Jennings believes that Galway should be inspired by the Welsh Government's report that is recommending 30km/h replace 50km/h as the default speed limit on urban roads throughout the country and should embrace the benefits of slower speeds.

One of the many admirable qualities of the late and unquestionably great John Hume was his ability to listen. As someone once said, courage is what it takes to stand up and speak; courage is also what it takes to sit down and listen. And John Hume possessed both.

He also gave new and positive meaning to a concept often derided – compromise, the recognition that through patient dialogue and respect you can find a way out of a dead end. By taking a huge political gamble in deciding to engage with Sinn Fein and Gerry Adams to seek a way out of the poisonous situation in Northern Ireland in the early 1990s, he laid the foundations for the Good Friday Agreement and for the Ireland in which we now live. Of course, there have been difficulties along the way. After such appalling bloodshed and hatred, could anything else be expected?

Connemara native and well known GP, Dr Maitiú Ó Tuathail, Medical Director of Heroes-Aid, has gained international media attention after posting a video on social media to debunk the myth that face masks lowers the wearer’s oxygen levels. Dr Ó Tuathail posted a video of himself to his Twitter page wearing six face masks while connected to a monitor displaying no change in his oxygen levels, to demonstrate that face masks have no effect on a wearer’s blood oxygen levels.
