Speaking about rural crime in Galway, Deputy Canney says that the absence of garda presence on the ground is a serious concern in every part of the country, saying that the number of houses and farms that are ‘robbed on a continuous basis’ is ‘frightening’.

Newcastle native and experienced mountain marathoner, Cathal McGrath, took on the Matterhorn Mountain in the Swiss Alps on Saturday, August 26, in aid of Galway based heart and stroke charity, Croí.
Described as one of the most challenging trail run marathons in Europe, the Matterhorn Sky Ultra is not for the faint of heart. The 49 kilometre trail is set over challenging terrain, reaching peaks of 3,600 vertical metres of ascent and descent and is outlined on the marathon’s website as a ‘contest without mercy for die hard runners’, and Cathal most certainly fits the bill, with him having specifically chosen to complete the Matterhorn Sky Ultra because of its daunting reputation.

As if it hadn’t happened already, the next General Election campaign kicked off in earnest yesterday morning with the publication of the new electoral boundaries across the country. For politicians, it’s a bit like the World Cup where you know you’ve qualified but you find out the hotels you’ll be staying in and most importantly, the pitch you will be playing on.
Although theoretically, the next General Election need not be called until February 2025 (remember the last one on the day that Operation Ciara devastated the Galway 2020 opening ceremony on Feb 8, 2020), the strong belief is that it will be held in the third quarter of next year, so as to avoid a winter election.

BT Ireland is encouraging local students aged 12 to 19 years to turn their creativity into project entries for next year's Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BTYSTE). The deadline for applications is October 2 2023 and the event takes place in Dublin from January 10 to 13 2024.
More than two thirds (67 per cent) of second level students are interested in learning more about pursuing a career in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics), according to a study of 500 secondary school students in Ireland. Conducted by BT Ireland, it examined their attitudes towards STEM as well as the original of their best ideas.
