Coláiste na Coiribe over ‘final hurdle’ for new school building

Students and teachers at Coláiste na Coiribe could be moving into a new school building by late 2015 after signifcant progress was made recently with the Galway Roscommon Education Training Board advertising for tenders for the construction project at Ballyburke in Knocknacarra.

The advertisement, placed on the Government eTenders procurement website last week, is seeking tenders for the construction of the new purpose built secondary school for Coláiste na Coiribe, which will accommodate 720 pupils and comprise three and two storey teaching blocks, a sports hall, five hard court surfaced ball courts, 68 parking spaces, and a grassed playing pitch.

Fahy to lead calls to scrap Merlin Woods bus corridor

Plans to build a bus corridor through Merlin Park Woods look set to be scrapped as councillors move to have the controversial proposal deleted from the Galway City Development Plan.

Fine Gael councillor Frank Fahy has tabled a motion for the February council meeting that the proposal be scrapped. He is confident he has the numbers to get his motion on to the table for discussion and to pass it when it comes up for an official vote.

Big demand for city rentals but it is not a bed of roses for landlords

There has been a noticeable increase in demand for rental properties in Galway of late, compounded by additional property buyers being held back by restrictive bank lending, increasing employment, and the general increase in population. According to local property letting agents, there has been a ‘surprise spike’ in queries in recent months, and rental properties are being snapped up within days of becoming available. They expect that rising demand for rental properties will continue for the foreseeable future but caution that it can still be a tough business.
