Showing his appreciation for the faith that the voters in Athenry and Oranmore have shown in him, Fianna Fáil’s Malachy Noone promises to work hard and return what they have done for him.

Councillor Malachy Noone will return to Galway County Council having won the third seat in the seventh count for the Athenry-Oranmore electoral area. Cllr Noone received 160 transfers to gain a total of 1,689 votes, 88 votes over the quota of 1,601.

Jobs boost for Portumna

An additional 65 jobs in Portumna as a result of a €30 million investment by Green Isle Foods in Ireland has been welcomed by Ciarán Cannon, Galway East TD and Junior Minister for Training and Skills at the Department of Education./

Green Isle Foods announced this week that the investment in its Irish operations will result in an additional 115 jobs over the next five years with 65 of those jobs in its pastry production plant in Portumna.

Government urged to give clarity on seaweed licensing

The Government is being urged to suspend the process of seaweek harvest licence applications until “absolute clarity” is given on whether it will result in a monopoly licence being granted to a single seaweed processor.

Independent MEP Marian Harkin made the comments following a meeting of seaweed interests in Rossaveal last Monday. The meeting comes after the recent acquisition of Aramara Teo by Canadian company Acadian Seaplants Ltd. It is understood that Acadian Seaplants will be using the Galway based company as a proxy to harvast from North Mayo to North Clare and to apply for a large-scale harvesting licence.
