Thu, Apr 02, 2015
Migrant women from the Imo Region of Nigeria, living in Galway (who have formed the Imo Women’s Association, Galway) are teaming up with local heart and stroke charity Croi and Galway County Council for a free health promotion event on Friday April 10 from 10am to 2pm in the Croi Heart and Stroke Centre, Newcastle Galway
This event is being run as part of Croí’s ‘Women at Heart’ campaign which aims to raise awareness of the fact that heart disease is the biggest killer of women in Ireland. However, women seem largely unaware of the significant differences between the sexes when it comes to symptoms, age of onset and need for medical care. This campaign aims to educate women on their risk of cardiovascular disease and empower them to take action. Announcing details of the event, Croi says this is a particularly important health promotion event as African women have a particularly higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

Thu, Apr 02, 2015
Gone are the days when food was something other people ate. Now everyone is atin’ it. We never had food when we were growing up. We just had Da Breakfast, Da Dinner and Da Tay. Da Supper was just cocoa and the odd biscuit. Food was something we saw in magazines on plates the likes of which you'd only take out for the Yanks as part of the ‘let's pretend we're something we're not’ annual campaign, when we'd sip tay, sorry tea out of blue willow cups with dainty fingers. And then we'd cover the table with food the likes of which we'd never ate and the likes of which they'd never ate and we'd depart then each thinking the other had the oddest taste in food ever.
And we'd be glad when they went back cos then we could get back to the Dinner and Da Tay and to believing that Captain Birdseye really existed.

Thu, Apr 02, 2015
A local senator has this week questioned the democracy of a decision to withdraw social inclusion funding from FORUM Connemara. The organisation has administered social and community assistance programmes in Connemara for the past 25 years, but was informed last month that service will shortly come to an end.
The County Galway Local Community Development Committee decided to reduce the ‘lots’ for the delivery of social inclusion funding in the county from two to one. FORUM Connemara lost the bid to tender, meaning east-Galway based Galway Rural Development will deliver all social and community assistance programmes across the county for the next five years.
