There is good news for people who have been waiting for a chance to join An Garda Síochána. The Public Appointments Service is currently accepting applications for An Garda Síochána on its website www.publicjobs.ie. Applications will continue to be accepted until Tuesday January 5 2016. Even better news is that Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, has announced that up to 600 new Garda trainees will be recruited in 2016.

Christmas revision courses at Mill Street

Enrolments for the Leaving and Junior Cert intensive Christmas courses are currently being accepted at the Galway Study Centre at Mill Street. Classes will start on Monday morning December 28 and continue until Saturday January 2. The centre will be closed on New Year’s Day.

The latest date for making a booking is Friday December 18, although it is expected that some classes will be completely booked out before this date. Revision will concentrate on key topics in each subject and students can enrol from one up to a maximum of four subjects. Excellent study notes will be provided and there will be a lot of emphasis on examination and study techniques.

Team behind Lily Mae charity single come up trumps again

A charity Christmas single featuring Shane Filan stars a number of teenagers from Galway. 'When I Grow Up' was recorded in the Bord Gáis Energy Theatre in October, and is masterminded by same team that created 'Tiny Dancer A Song For Lily-Mae' in 2012. That tune was the second biggest selling charity single in Irish chart history, second only to the 1985 smash hit, Band Aid's 'Do They Know It's Christmas'.

Time to follow words with actions on A&E

Everytime I hear an ambulance, my ears prick up. Part of this is conditioning as a young hack. A squealing ambulance equalled a story. Flashing fire brigade equalled a story. A speeding Garda car equalled a story. Where haste and emergency vehicles came together, it was the cue for my journalistic curiosity and desire to make a few quid with a few paras that kicked in. Now, when I hear the same things, I think I’m more likely to be in one of them than chasing one.

Recently, when I hear an ambulance or see the blue light in the rear view mirror, I wince a little. Mainly because during my little dalliance with mortality last year, I ended up in one making its way through city traffic to UHG where I spent the guts of two days in A&E.

City council to explore designated planning area for urban Gaelgoirí
