A charity fundraising event to benefit the local community is being organised by the Galway Hospice and Corrib Lions Club.

The two plan to host Strictly Galway 2016, a dance competition for volunteers to be held at an event night in the Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa on April 29. Those attending the event will have the opportunity to show their support for their preferred dancers with seating at tables designated for each couple.

Aware has launched a new freephone number for the organisation’s support line.

The service, available for individuals who experience depression or bipolar disorder, and for relatives or friends concerned for someone they care about, is available now on 1800 80 48 48 free of charge from Galway and throughout every county. The Aware Support Line is available seven days a week from 10am-10pm.

Gig in aid of COPE Galway and Australian charity taking place in Monroe's Tavern

Ireland’s bella voce, Amanda Neri performs at a special benefit gig in the Side Bar at Monroe’s Tavern on Sunday, April 3.

The performance is in aid of two worthy causes, COPE Galway, and Icefight Brisbane, and it represents the first ever joint benefit gig between Irish and Australian charities. COPE Galway provides services for homelessness and domestic violence and senior support in Galway. Icefight Brisbane is an initiative in response to the widespread use of the deadly drug crystal meth in Australia. It is estimated in Australia approximately 150,000 to 250,000 people (mainly under 40 years old) are hooked on this destructive substance.
