Advertiser confirmed as runaway leader in circulation race

The Galway Advertiser has increased its lead in the local newspaper circulation race, pulling well ahead of its local rivals, according to the latest distribution and sales figures, published by the UK-based Audit Bureau of Circulation (ABC)

The newspaper which has the highest weekly circulation of any regional newspaper in Ireland was this week confirmed as the runaway leader in the circulation race in Galway.

Pregnant woman punched in stomach by ‘spiked’ man, court hears

A six-months pregnant woman was punched in the stomach by a drunk and abusive man who claimed that his drink had been “spiked”, the Galway District Court heard this week.

Kevin Salcombe offered the explanation of his drink being spiked after the court heard last Monday how he had been fighting in a city centre bar before being taken outside by female friends but then assaulted them.

Man sets flammable bag alight and throws it at hostel gates

A man who filled a plastic bag with flammable liquid, set it alight, and then threw it at the gate of the hostel after he had been refused entry was sentenced to three months in jail when he appeared at Galway District Court last Monday.

Michael Coogan pleaded guilty to arson at Fairgreen Hostel on April 10, 2008. Charges for being intoxicated in a public place, and for threatening and abusive behaviour were withdrawn.
