UHG performs first incisionless surgery in Ireland for blockages of the oesophagus

The west's biggest hospital is the first in the country to introduce incision-less, minimally invasive surgery to help correct blockages of the oesophagus.

The procedure is being carried out at University Hospital Galway by Mr Paul Carroll, a consultant oesophagogastric and general surgeon who specialises in minimally invasive and endoscopic surgery for oesophago-gastric cancer and benign disease.

Social Democrats nominate Alan Curran for vacant city council seat

The Galway West branch of the Social Democrats held a meeting in Renmore on Monday, February 27, to select a candidate to be nominated for co-option for a vacant council seat on Galway City Council.

The previous occupant of the seat was Owen Hanley, who resigned his seat in the council in early January 2023, following allegations made against him on social media. The nominee is Coláiste Éinde secondary school teacher Alan Curran, whose extensive resumé has seen him participate in a plethora of local organisations including, Galway Cycling Campaign, Native Woodland Trust Galway Branch, Irish Wildlife Trust Galway as well as being an active member of the Galway Mountain Rescue Team for eight years and coaching athletics, the U14 and Junior Rugby Team and an underage coach for St. Michael's GAA. Curran is also a co-founder of the Galway Cycle Bus project, a volunteer led group that allows children to cycle safely to and from school.

Burglary in Oranmore
Gardaí in Oranmore are investigating a burglary which occurred at H West Motors Oranmore on Tuesday February 21 at approximately 10pm. The steel fence was damaged at rear of garage and the suspect was disturbed by owner who took off on foot. A jeep was observed in the area beforehand acting suspiciously. City’s commercial buildings suffer decline

The number of empty commerical buldings in Galway is higher than the national average of fourteen per cent.

In the twelve months last year 2022 the vacancy rate in Galway increased by 0.7 percentage points (pp) to 17.6 per cent, according to the latest GeoDirectory Commercial Vacancy Rates Report, published today.
