Auto diesel prices have risen sharply in past year

The price of a litre of petrol is now 131.0 cents on average, just barely down (0.2 cent) on the figure for September. Diesel has risen by 0.9 cent to an average of 124.8 cent, according to the latest monthly fuel price survey by AA Ireland.

“It has been a grim year for fuel prices, and that continues,” says Conor Faughnan. “Petrol now costs motorists 13.5 per cent more than it did last October. Diesel is 18.5 per cent more expensive than it was this time last year.”

Galway accounts for six per cent of car scrappage scheme

Nearly 800 cars have been registered in Galway since January by buyers who availed of the government scrappage scheme, writes Padraic Deane.

In total 13,615 cars have been processed under the scheme nationally. Forty-nine percent of those are category A cars (€100 road tax p/a), with the remaining 51 per cent category B cars (€150p/a). Galway, with 792 cars registered, accounts for six per cent of national sales under the car scrappage scheme.

Imagine if tomorrow morning your local authority decided to remove all yield, stop, and other such signage, as well as traffic lights and pedestrian crossings from your village, town or city?

As one of the delegates who attended the annual Automotive Forum, organised by the Irish Motoring Writers Association and sponsored by Semperit Tyres, I opened my mind to this suggestion. I listened as evidence was presented on how overloading the motorist with traffic lights and road signs can increase road crashes in urban areas, and that handing more responsibility to the driver can result in a spectacularly positive change in behaviour.

BMW recalls cars

BMW Ireland is recalling 533 cars because of possible problems with the cars’ power braking system. The move is part of worldwide recall of 350,000 cars.

BMW Ireland has confirmed that 533 V8 and V12 powered BMW 5, 6, and 7 Series and Rolls Royce motor cars, produced between July 2001 and November 2009 are affected by the recall.
