THE ROMAN Catholics of Northern Ireland have very little to thank British governments for, except a piece of legislation, which would help empower a generation to speak out against discrimination of Catholics in Ulster.

In 1947 a British Act of Parliament granted free secondary education to Northern Irish children for the first time. Those born into working class and poverty stricken areas now had hope, and among the first generation to benefit from this legislation were Seamus Heaney, John Hume, Phil Coulter, Paul Brady, Bishop Edward Daly, former ambassador James Sharkey, and Brian Friel.

ROY KOCH was an Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association member and a worker at Northwest Airlines. He never expected to one day become a travelling detective, investigating where his job went.

In 2005, 4,400 mechanics, custodians, and cleaners at Northwest Airlines went on strike. The company wanted to lay off 53 per cent of its union and outsource their jobs.

A world of music from The Penguin Café

SIMON JEFFES was resting on a beach in the south of France in 1972, recovering from food poisoning, when he had a strange hallucination of a world devoid of joy or colour, except for a noisy, happy, place called The Penguin Café which had its own house band.

Jeffes, a composer and classically trained musician, was inspired to form a group that would be the house band to his imaginary café and thus the strange, wonderful, world of The Penguin Café Orchestra was born. From 1976 until Jeffes’ passing in 1997, the band released eight albums of beautifully eccentric music which mixed English classical, pop, prog, world, and avant garde.
