I have wanted to tell this story for 27 years. It started when I replied to a job ad in the DCU newsletter, which had been placed by the Centre for Independent Living (CIL). I was invited to an interview at the Royal Dublin Hotel. Soon, the door was pushed open and a bearded man in a wheelchair rolled in. A fishing hat sat on his head, a cigarette hung from his lips and he wore a smile on his face. ‘Shake the thumb,’ he told me. This was my first introduction to Martin Naughton.

Next week sees the start of previews before the world premiere in Galway of The Chief — Jimmy Murphy's a new play that reveals the man behind the iconic figure of Michael Collins. Murphy has written some of the poignant Irish drama of the past few decades and there is great anticipation at how he is to treat the Collins story.

Marking the centenary of Collins’ death in August 1922, The Chief explores his intimate relationship with Kitty Kiernan, his dream for a united Ireland, and his guilt at taking arms against former comrades. Decadent Theatre Company’s Andrew Flynn directs a cast of six in a drama that speaks directly to the Ireland of today.
