An exhibition celebrating the ordinary

Romanticizing The Commonplace in the Galway City Gallery

ROMANTICIZING THE Commonplace is the title of an exhibition of paintings which does just that - celebrate places and sights considered ordinary or which are taken for granted.

The exhibition, by Delaney Davis, an artist originally from Reno, Nevada, but who is now based in Dublin, opens at the Galway City Gallery, 15 New Dock Street, on Friday March 9 at 6.30pm.

The works on display are drawn from scenes in Reno and Dublin. “After spending two years away from home," she said, "I returned to find many familiar places changed, or disappeared entirely. I know this is expected when one is away for a time, but I was still unprepared for the unsettling effect of knowing my memories of home were no longer accurate." Davis uses oil paints on a variety of surfaces, incorporating canvas, panels, and wooden boards. Her work is marked by the focus on contrasting light and shadows, as well as the geometric aspects of contemporary architecture.

The exhibition runs until Friday March 23. The gallery opens from 12 noon to 6pm, Thursdays to Sundays. See galwaycitygallery.ie
